Hydroacoustic Current Meters for the Measurement of Discharge in Shallow Streams and Rivers


Field testing of second-generation ADV prototype

Field testing of the second-generation ADV wading-rod prototype consisted of making discharge measurements at eight USGS streamflow-gaging stations. One ADV discharge measurement was made per station. A mechanical current meter (conventional) discharge measurement was made concurrently for comparison. The same tag line and stations were used for both measurements, to the extent possible.

Stream conditions varied from site to site: water velocities ranged from nearly zero to more than 25 ft/s, depths from 0.2 to 2.8 ft, and streambed conditions ranged from rocky to smooth and sandy. The following conclusions were drawn from the tests:
